The Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice is one of the leading technical universities in Poland. With the numbers of students exceeding 26,000 in 2015, the school ranks 12th place in Poland. A high level of competitiveness among educational services, forces universities to introduce new interactive teaching methods. As a response, the professors decided to implement some practical didactic methods for communication and problem-solving. One example is Case Teaching.

The need for an additional method and communication channel to work with students.

Based on modern educational approaches, Silesian Technical University considered adapting new media into their teaching. The idea of project-based learning in technical courses spurred the building of a web platform for teachers who help students wade through complicated technical problems. The goal of the project was to build a web platform which allows teachers to divide their materials into easy-to-discuss steps.

The case teaching platform (The CTP).

The case teaching platform allows the content of lectures/projects to be presented step by step, providing students a place to discuss their points-of-view and ask questions. Each step presents an intriguing topic and out-of-the-box questions. The system reveals their lectures in a timeframe of cycles, making cooperation among students really powerful. The platform also allows the preparation of notes for students and teachers, clearly projected during the classes. Multimedia content is readily available and can be used at any moment during the classes. There are security levels set to protect against unauthorized access, due to copyrights.

Collecting all materials in one place and allowing them to be shown in a targeted manner, at the right time.

The web platform supports teachers during the class, collecting all the course material in one place and allowing them to be shown in a targeted manner, at a specific point in time. It also gives the possibility of preparing courses from sets of classes that were previously prepared. Additionally, sending the collected material to defined users is also possible, at times before, during and after the class.

We used modern programming technologies to implement the platform, including: NodeJs (ExpressJS + Mongo) i Angular 5 (+ Material UI).

Flexible web platform.

The system can be adapted for academic teachers and others conducting engineering courses etc. The owners of this idea could see the larger goal of using a web platform for students to tutor each other and share know-how. The system is also a base for a commercial business. There are many companies which can use the case teaching platform procedurally in the onboarding of new team members.
